Description

Green Hill Park is located in Salem, VA, USA. The Roanoke River runs along the edge of the park. It is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Recently, we went there to have a picnic lunch & fish...well, I went to paint and my family went to fish. As soon as one of our group got in the river in this spot, a small snake started to crawl up her leg. There was much screaming going on! The ones fishing moved up stream and left me on the bank. Knowing there was a snake this close by, I was not about to be painting with a canvas in front of me with a snake running around looking for legs to climb! That snake came back to check me out 2 more times and I sent him packing with a big stick. I settled for photographing the spot for painting later (this is the result). My boyfriend felt guilty for leaving me by myself, so as he was coming back, 30 minutes later, he fell right here in the river in front of me (no photo!) so the rest of our time was spent with me taking care of his hurt wrist and serving up the picnic. There were snakes everywhere out there on that little island of grass in the middle of the river. On this bank, there were many tree roots...all looking like snakes to me. I took my photos home and this painting is the result. It looks like nature framed this scene for me with the way the trees grow.
